Portland Tribune:Vero is testing a check cashing system that utilizes ATM-type kiosks and an enrollment process to help banks and retailers reduce fraud. It's aimed at people who have steady jobs and income but no regular bank accounts.
Through the Vero system, which is undergoing a trial run at the La Quinta, Calif., branch of Palm Desert National Bank, users go through a one-time enrollment that includes submitting official identification, a biometric iris or fingerprint scan and a thorough background check.
Upon approval, a customer is issued a Vero card and personal identification number, and can take a paycheck or personal check to a Vero kiosk in a bank or retail outlet for cashing.
