The New York MTA plans to install long awaited OMNY machines that accept tap cards in subway stations this summer, but the old MetroCard machines won't be going away for awhile, according to a Gothamist.com report.
The new machines will be installed at 472 subway stations by September, allowing riders to purchase and reload OMNY fare cards. The tap-to-pay system will be used by those with contactless credit cards, smartphones or physical OMNY cards from a retail store.
MetroCards, meanwhile, remain the only option on the JFK AirTrain and Roosevelt Island Tramway. The agency plans to add OMNY readers to the Roosevelt Island Tramway turnstiles and at least one JFK AirTrain entrance by Thanksgiving.
