The ACLU of New York has criticized LinkNYC — the provider of public Wi-Fi kiosks that offer free Internet access and information about events, for threatening user privacy.
An article recently posted on the organization's website cited a recent audit that indicates LinkNYC puts the personal information of millions of New Yorkers at risk.
A recent audit commissioned by the city's Office of Technology and Innovation found CityBridge — the consortium behind LinkNYC — has violated its own privacy policy and has failed to anonymize MAC addresses — unique identifiers — of user devices. In addition, it is not known how CityBridge is utilizing personal data.
The article also claims there is little evidence LinkNYC has helped with improving internet access to disadvantaged people as most kiosks are located in wealthier areas.
The organization claims an alternative that provides high-speed universal internet access is needed.
