New LCDs allow more distance between kiosks, digital signals

March 16, 2003

CHICAGO -- Display Werks Inc. has introduced what it calls the "XC" Series of LCD flat panel displays, designed specifically for digital signage, kiosk and other retail applications.

According to a news release, the XC series -- which stands for "extended computer" -- displays allow computer signals such as video, touch screen communication, stereo audio, mouse and keyboard to be transmitted via Cat 5 cable (standard network cable) and directly connected to the display.

The Cat 5 cable connects to the display via an RJ45 (phone jack style) connector. One version of the XC display has breakouts for keyboard, mouse and line level stereo audio. The panels can be panel, flush or VESA mounted.

Mark Harriman, president of Display Werks called the new series "a break-through" in the release, noting that flat panel display technology has been limited by a six foot VGA cable. "We have made the LCD displays more conducive to the retail and digital signage markets by allowing them to be easily extended out to the floor and around the retail area with less wiring, less intermediate boxes and less space."

Harriman said in the release that the displays will allow a PC to be located up to 750 feet away in a clean room or some other secure area.

Display Werks offers the XC displays in 15-inch and 17-inch diagonal LCD screens, with plans to introduce larger screens in the future. Different versions of the XC display allow for daisy chaining multiple displays together or supporting features such as touch screen, audio, keyboard and mouse.

The company is showcasing the new XC series LCD panels this week at GlobalShop 2003 in Chicago, IL, booth number 5632.
