New airport scanner collects fingerprints and passports

Biometrics company DERMALOG has announced the launch of an airport scanner that collects both passport data and fingerprints. It is designed to be integrated with kiosks, electronic gates and border control.

Biometrics company DERMALOG Identification systems has recently revealed a new airport scanner to scan both passports and fingerprints on the same surface. According to the press release, previously you needed two scanners to complete this task.

The new device, the VF1, was unveiled at the Cartes exhibition in Paris and is useful for kiosks, electronic gates, border control and national registration, according to the release. It is designed with the following features:

  • Ability to take infrared and ultraviolet images of passport documents;
  • RFID reader to read electronic passports;
  • Module to detect fake passports; and
  • Captures one, two or four fingerprints with 500 dpi resolution and 256 grey levels

"The VF1 scanner is our latest innovation to enable modern eGates and kiosks to use only one single scanner for passports and fingerprints," said Gunther Mull, CEO of DERMALOG, in the release. "Its capability to also capture signatures, barcodes and flight tickets, as well as arrival/departure documents on the same scanning area makes the VF1 even more versatile."
