NETSHIFT POWERS VISITOR INFORMATION KIOSKS FOR SOUTHERN OREGON

October 20, 2002

If the Oregon Trail is an icon of American history because it symbolises the risks taken by a growing and ambitious nation, Oregon itself is a symbol of the rewards. The magnificent beaches, forests, peaks and river valleys that sparked last century's mass migration continue to attract thousands of new visitors to the state each year. Modern technology ensures they come in safety, comfort and convenience."urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The state's latest technological innovation is designed to improve the visitor experience of the byways that carry them from one attraction to the next. Spearheaded by The Southern Oregon Visitors Association, Oregon Tourism and National Scenic Byways (NSB), touch kiosks will be installed at 20 tourist hubs across the state. Tourists will be able to access traffic news, road cams, and a multitude of local web sites with attraction information.

Oregon's remote locations provide a tricky technology challenge in terms of overall reliability. Certain sites, such as the spectacular Crater Lake National Park, are so remote that connections are made via satellite. NetShift's Builder and Runtime software are designed to ensure the systems are suitable for use, by preventing system crash and the need for on-site technical support.

Joe Hunkins, a consultant to Southern Oregon Visitors Association says: "NetShift was extremely insightful with the software and programming aspects of this project and paid prompt attention to our specific needs. The creative proved to be a dramatic improvement on the initial design and we hope it will become a national model for kiosk based travel information systems."
