ATLANTA - Seventeen percent of Americans have used a self-service kiosk, according to a survey conducted for NCR Corp.
The study results, presented in an NCR news release, also showed that of that percentage, nearly half used kiosks at a mall. Close behind were grocery stores and airports.
Not surprisingly, younger people who have grown up with the Internet and are more comfortable with technology in general are more likely to have used the kiosks.
Nelson Gomez, NCR general manager for Web kiosks, said that kiosks were gaining market acceptance.
Sixty-eight percent of those using kiosks found them easy to operate. Only three percent thought self-service machines were complicated.
Among those who have used them, slightly more than half said kiosks improve service.
The survey, conducted during three days in June by Opinion Research Corp. International, sampled 500 men and 520 women, 18 years of age or older, living in private households in the U.S.
Kiosk consulting firm Summit Research Associates Inc. estimates that there are 150,000 interactive kiosks in the U.S.
