Nanonation rolls out interactive skybox system

October 20, 2002

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Kiosk developer Nanonation is taking interactive entertainment to a new level with its skybox system.

Guests in the 74 luxury suites at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., were the first to test the new system during the Oct. 18 Minnesota Wild National Hockey League (NHL) game, according to a company news release.

The system includes a networked computer, widescreen display and customized software that gives fans the ability to view and interact with high-definition video and images. Users can browse a library of exclusive content, live statistics, scores and news through the Internet.

Each skybox is personalized to include corporate branding, personalized messages and favorite Internet links, according to the release. Nanonation plans to extend the system and let customers order food, merchandise or customized posters of their favorite players. Those items would be delivered to the customers' seats, Nanonation CEO Bradley Walker said.

The skybox suites are equipped with widescreen format Apple 23" Cinema High Definition liquid crystal displays and Apple PowerBooks to drive the system. The back-end content is managed and delivered through an Apple Xserve server. NHL partner HDNet provides the video content, according to the release.
