CHENNAI, India -- n-Logue Communications, which earlier this year announced its plans to deploy a series of pay-per-use Internet access kiosks throughout India (See story: Kiosks in India), on Aug. 6 states that the plan has been expanded to include 1 million kiosks over the next five years.
The company, which said in June the units would cost about $810 apiece to set up, has already placed an unspecified amount of kiosks in four Indian states, according to India's Economic Times. More kiosks will soon be available in four other states.
n-Logue and local Internet service providers will split the costs of installing the kiosks; company officials estimate the kiosk will reach break-even status in six months.
Company officials estimate that with 1 million kiosks, n-Logue can provide Internet access to 85 percent of India's rural population within five years. Roughly 750 million Indian citizens live in these villages.
