Multiport serial cards designed for kiosks

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Storage and networking vendor Maxtec has unveiled a range of 3.3/5v Universal PCI Universal PCI multiport serial cards from Perle.

The UltraPort Universal 3.3/5v PCI cards are designed for retail point of sale, data acquisition, office automation and advanced kiosk design, according to a news release.

"With the continued development of the PCI bus, these new cards address the market opportunity for customers upgrading to a new generation of servers being produced with the 3.3v-signaling PCI bus," said Perry Hutton , product manager at Maxtec.

He said that in an effort to reduce PC power consumption, manufacturers such as IBM, Delland Hewlett-Packard are introducing systems that no longer use 5v signaling on their PCI bus, instead preferring the 3.3v standard.

"Perle has developed an enhanced range of serial products that are able to work on this new platform while still supporting the older 5v platforms," Hutton said.

Maxtec did not disclose pricing and availability.
