Efforts to provide state-issued IDs or driver's licenses to people experiencing homelessness are expanding through the deployment of mobile kiosks in Arizona, according to a KVOA News report. The initiative is a collaboration between the Homeless ID Project and the Arizona Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Division, aiming to improve access to identification services for unsheltered individuals across Southern Arizona.
The mobile kiosks connect directly to the state's Motor Vehicle Division system and will extend services beyond the existing location at Key Campus in downtown Phoenix, which has been operating since July 2023. Under the expansion, one kiosk will serve multiple communities throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area while another will operate in the Tucson region.
The Homeless ID Project is a nonprofit founded in 1988 that helps individuals experiencing homelessness obtain or replace identification documents. According to Executive Director Rick Mitchell, identification plays a critical role in enabling access to employment and other opportunities, with 70% of clients reporting they seek IDs primarily to secure jobs. The mobile approach allows the organization to reach clients directly in their communities and support their efforts toward independence.
The kiosks were donated by Kyndryl, a company specializing in mobile biometric and credential authentication technologies, which has partnered with ADOT MVD for more than a decade.
