Minnesota lawmakers are advancing legislation that would ban virtual currency kiosks statewide, according to the state's House of Representatives, with the measure included in a broader commerce policy bill approved by a House committee. The proposal would require all such kiosks to be removed by the end of the year and mandate that operators return any funds owed to customers. The push for a ban follows testimony from law enforcement citing a rise in scams tied to the machines, though industry operators argue the measure unfairly targets their business rather than the criminals involved.
The ban would apply only to physical kiosks, while online transactions would remain legal. The provision is part of a larger omnibus bill that also addresses mortgage servicing standards, student loan transfers, insurance lead generation, scrap metal licensing and crowdfunding regulations, among other policy updates. The legislation now heads to the House floor for further consideration.
