Metro Transit riders in Minneapolis will soon be able to pay fares by tapping a payment card or using Google Pay, Apple Pay and Cash App, according to a report in the Star Tribune.

Dennis Dworshak, Metro Transit's senior manager of revenue operations, said during a Metro Council transportation committee meeting the transit is considering a $37.7 million project to replace card validators and other equipment installed in the mid 2000s.

If the council approves the plan, the agency would contract Cubic Corp., a provider of transportation technolgoy solutions, to provide new equipment for the SouthWest Transit, Plymouth Metrolink, Minnesota Valley Transit and Maple Grove Transit.

The existing Go-To cards will be phased out over two to three years and replaced with smart cards that would allow users to tie multiple cards to a single account and allow users to view their account balances in real time.
