The city of Muskegon, Michigan collected $500,000 in revenue in its first season of paid parking at beaches, which is far more than expected, according to an mlive.com report. Visitors purchased 35,094 daily passes and 8,835 season passes from kiosks.
Frank Peterson, city manager, credited good weather and the coronavirus pandemic for drawing people to the beaches.
Paid parking began on Memorial Day to Sept. 15 at Pere Marquette beach, Kruse Park, Margaret Drake Elliott Park and Harbour Towne Beach.
Those who did not get a parking pass incurred a $30 fine, while those who did not display a purchased pass were fined $10. A ticketed motorist who did not know they had to pay could bring the ticket to an officer and be permitted to purchase a parking pass at a kiosk and have the ticket canceled.
