OAKBROOK, Ill. -- McDonald's will soon have 13 stores using kiosks to let customers key in their own orders, and restaurant executives said the technology could become standard at worldwide locations.
According to a Reuters news report, McDonald's has been testing kiosks for more than a year, and that the restaurant will soon have stores in Denver and Raleigh, N.C., using some form of the technology. Customers can place their orders on a touchscreen, and either pick up their food at a separate area or have it brought to their tables.
The kiosks accept currency, but do not make change. Eventually, the story said, McDonald's will experiment with kiosks that accept credit and debit cards. Customers already get a printed receipt.
McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Jim Cantalupo said earlier this year that he would position McDonald's as a more contemporary company in touch with the latest trends.
According to the story, the company will decide by the end of 2003 whether to expand the kiosk project.
