The Mariposa County Adult Detention Center in Mariposa County, California has installed two kiosks which allow the public to deposit money into a prisoner’s account electronically, the Mariposa Gazette reports. Once processed by the inmate and booking officer at the jail, the money can be used by the prisoner in the jail’s commissary system.
The Adult Detention Center said it no longer accepts funds over the counter or money orders through the mail for inmates’ funds. As an alternative to using the kiosks, people can deposit funds to prisoners’ accounts by telephone or through the www.govpaynow.com website.
The kiosks, which are located in the Adult Detention Center’s lobby and its booking area, accept cash and debit or credit cards. The machines assess a surcharge of $3.25 per transaction, and the maximum number of debit/credit card transactions per week per inmate is five for a total of $200. Website deposits have a surcharge of $5.25 per transaction, compared to $6.75 per telephone transaction.
