LONDON -- Marconi will supply BT Payphones with its new Neptune 1000 Internet kiosks as part of the company's first commercial sale of the product. The announcement follows Marconi's December unveiling of the world's largest rollout of new generation Web phones.
Three hundred of the new units will be shipped to BT before the end of March, according to a company news release. Another 900 units will be supplied during the following fiscal year. The kiosks were designed and developed at Marconi Interactive Systems at Chorley, Lancashire.
BT plans to sell the kiosks to its commercial customers, according to the release. The payphone company hopes to penetrate the private market for next-generation broadband and Internet public communications in the governmental, retail, financial services and leisure industries.
The kiosks can be configured to include a range of peripherals, including printers, Web cams and speakers. Broadband connectivity is standard on the units.
