Long Beach bike share includes solar-powered kiosks
August 15, 2010
Still in the planning stages, the bike-sharing program will provide rentable bikes to residents and visitors throughout downtown, according to the city's Department of Public Works. BIXI and B-cycle, two companies that work mostly with European cities in running bike-share programs, showed rentable bicycles to city officials last week. The cost of renting the bicycles will be set once a bike-sharing company is hired.
The program will provide 500 bicycles divided between more than 50 bike kiosks in the downtown area, and another 60 bikes will be available at six kiosks at Cal State University Long Beach, according to a city official.
