London kiosks an outlet for abuse sufferers

February 20, 2002

LONDON - Victims of domestic violence in the United Kingdom have a new outlet for voicing their concerns, thanks to a kiosk trial program developed by the Domestic Violence Intervention Project (DVIP) and kiosk developer Cityspace Ltd.

Cityspace, which earlier this year installed about 100 information kiosks in five London suburbs (see story: Londoners finding kiosks a big i-plus), made DVIP information available on four of the kiosks in December. The kiosks contain information for domestic-abuse sufferers on dealing with abuse and leaving abusive partners.

There is also a link to allow users to send e-mails to the DVIP. The British Broadcasting Corp.(BBC) reported that the kiosks began generating e-mails to the DVIP within a few days of launching the pilot program.

"Anything that can enable women to find out information safely is a good thing," DVIP national development worker Jo Todd told the BBC.

Cityscape kiosks are currently accessible in the London suburbs of Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea, Southwark, Sutton, Islington, and Bromley.
