Logan to test biometrics systems

February 26, 2002

BOSTON - Logan International Airport, the departure point for two of the four hijacked planes involved in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, will install two sets of biometrics systems in the airport as a security measure.

The facial-recognition systems should be installed by early December, the Boston Globe reported. Following a 90-day test, airport officials will decide whether to install either system on a permanent basis.

Viisage Technology Inc. and Visionics Corp. are installing the systems. They will be installed at undisclosed locations in the airport.

One system will feature a kiosk housing a camera that will compare faces passing through the checkpoint with a law-enforcement database. Any person whose face matches a face in the database will be detained. The other system will capture facial images passing through metal detectors.

Airports in San Francisco, Oakland, Calif., and Knoxville, Tenn., are all planning to install biometrics systems, according to the Boston Globe.
