A book vending machine installed at an Arizona mall has exceeded expectations, encouraging the Sierra Vista Public Library to place another machine, according to a Herald Review report.

The machine has recorded 100 to 125 checkouts per month, said Emily Duchon, library manager, versus expectations of 50.

In May, the library added DVDs to the machine and a greater variety of books.

The machine holds 135 books and allows users to scan a library card or punch in their card number. An RFID chip authenticates the user's ID, activating the glass door to open and allowing them to remove as many books as they wish.

Duchon said she hopes to install another one at Fort Huachuca, an army base in Sierra Vista, by next spring.
