BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Kiosk Information Systems (KIS) and medical information provider ICU-USA.com Inc. are expanding a program that offers advice and topical help to families and friends of patients in intensive care units.
The KIS/ICU-USA program, which is currently deployed at hospitals in Des Monies, Iowa, and Evanston, Ill., will roll out at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis and the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., this fall.
Designed to go in ICU waiting rooms and hospital lobbies, the kiosks offer a link to ICU-USA's Web site. The site provides information on ICU medical conditions, procedures, medications, and equipment. The content on the site is developed by ICU clinicians and written in laymen's terms to make the information gathering process smoother.
Each kiosk also features local content, including a hospital guide and information on local hotels and restaurants.
KIS officials said the kiosks were designed so users can either stand or sit while browsing the Web site. And a trackball was built into the unit to make navigating the site smoother. Company officials did not disclose how much the units cost or what sort of agreements KIS and ICU-USA have with individual hospitals to deploy the units.
