Kiosks ID drivers at intermodal terminal

November 29, 2004

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Science Applications International Corporation's (SAIC) Security and Transportation Technology business unit was awarded a contract by Union Pacific Railroad (UP) to supply and install an automated gate system to enhance productivity and security at UP's new intermodal terminal in Dallas. SAIC has installed similar systems at five other UP facilities, according to a news release.

SAIC's integrated intermodal solutions streamline the processing of equipment and personnel at ports, rail yards and other intermodal facilities. Combining optical character recognition (OCR), biometrics and other technologies, the automated gate system in Dallas will enable UP to automatically identify and process containers, trucks, chassis and drivers at the entry and exit gates. UP will use the data from the system for traffic routing, security, record keeping and other functions.

At the gates, OCR portals will read equipment numbers and capture high-resolution images of containers for online damage inspection. In the gate lanes, kiosks will perform driver transactions automatically, using ultrasonic fingerprint-scanning to identify drivers. SAIC's central server will integrate the information for each truck and send it to the terminal operating system in near real time.

SAIC is the nation's largest employee-owned research and engineering company, providing information technology, systems integration and eSolutions to commercial and government customers. With annual revenues of nearly $7 billion, SAIC and its subsidiaries, including Telcordia Technologies, have more than 44,000 employees at offices in more than 150 cities worldwide.
