Kiosks could solve parking problem
September 26, 2010
Alexandria, Va., will spend about $1.3 million to replace 1,039 coin-operated, single-space parking meters with 125 multispace meters that can accept credit cards, according to theAlexandria Gazette Packet.
The popular tourist destination earlier this year raised the hourly parking rate from $1 to $1.75, comparable to nearby Arlington, Va., and Georgetown in Washington, D.C. But Alexandria merchants and locals complained that the old meters didn't accept cards and few people carried around seven quarters.
The city council voted to seek a provider of the new meters and install them as soon as early next year.
