Kiosk project in Long Island declared a success

July 18, 2014

Visitors to Jones Beach, Long Island, N.Y., can now pay for parking using credit and debit cards and cash at the new automated kiosks located in the state park, according to a Newsday article.

The kiosks were installed to decongest the busy toll plaza during summer months. Customers can purchase a day pass for parking at one of the five solar-powered kiosks, helping dissolve what could sometimes be miles of traffic.

"This is the first time in the history of Jones Beach that we're utilizing automation for paid parking services -- we've never had that before," said George Gorman, deputy regional director for state parks. "It's more convenient for people."

"The kiosks cost about $8,500 each and another $1,000 to $1,500 to install and set up," the article said.

Jones Beach State Park director Susan Guliani proclaimed the kiosk project a success and said that it would not result in employee layoffs.

Long Island's Hither Hills State Park, Caleb Smith State Park, and Bayard Cutting Arboretum are scheduled to have the parking kiosks installed by the end of the month.
