Kiosk earns entrepreneur Indian kudos

February 19, 2002

California technology executive Steven Puthuff has been honored for his work in developing technologies that allow people to communicate over the Internet in their native languages using a kiosk.

The Priyadarshini Academy, a socio-cultural-educational organization created in 1985 to enhance cultural and education ties between India and the rest of the world, has awarded Puthuff, chairman of SyberSay Communications Corp., this year's Priyadarshini Global Award.

The award honors Puthuff's work with the Mumbai, India-based Institute for Sustainable Futures in developing an information kiosk, called the Information Communications and Education (ICE) Centers. The kiosk brings together Internet service and satellite communications to provide health, education, and economic information. Users can speak to the kiosk in their native languages and receive interactive responses in that language.

San Jose, Calif.-based SyberSay Communications develops ergonomically designed wired and wireless communications devices.

Puthuff said he plans to introduce the ICE Centers in the United States and is encouraging the private and government sectors to join the project.
