EV charging stations installed after July 1, 2022 in Kentucky will be required to pay a tax to support the state's road funding under a new law, according to a WDRB.com report.
Anyone that installs a publicly available EV charging station will be required to quantify the amount of electricity the charger dispenses, even if there is no meter, and pay a monthly tax.
The tax is designed to raise revenue from drivers that do not contribute to state road funding. EV drivers do not pay the state gas tax, the primary support for road and bridge funds.
Critics say the tax will discourage public EV charging stations and will double tax Kentucky EV drivers since the state assesses an annual $120 fee for registered EVs.
Kentucky is one of seven states that separately tax the electricity consumed at public EV charging stations, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
