Ireland's Superquinn to add NCR self-checkout

January 25, 2007

ATLANTA — NCR Corp. announced that Superquinn, one of Ireland's most widely recognized supermarket chains, has signed a contract to deploy NCR FastLane self-checkout in 19 stores, predominantly in Dublin and its suburbs, by March 2007.

Superquinn first installed NCR FastLane at its newly remodeled Blanchardstown location southwest of Dublin. The revamped store brings new concepts to Irish supermarket retailing, including cooking demonstrations, a smoothie bar in the store's café, a fresh food market hall and more than 600 new product lines. The NCR FastLane units were delivered with a custom jet-black finish to match the supermarket's interior walls.

"In the first week alone, NCR FastLane was used by 30 percent of our total customer base," said Superquinn chief information officer John Farrelly. "NCR's self-checkout technology supports Superquinn's development program to put Superquinn back where it belongs — at the forefront of innovation and customer service in the Irish market."

Superquinn has been an NCR customer for 10 years. The company led the Irish market with in-store fresh food preparation in the early 1970s and a customer loyalty plan in the 1990s. The chain also was a leader in offering online shopping and an online wine warehouse.
