Aer Lingus Regional, the primary carrier at Belfast City Airport in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has launched an automated baggage drop system designed to enhance passenger throughput and reduce check-in times, according to an article on Regional Gateway.

The kiosks allow passengers using the airline's mobile application to process their checked luggage in under two minutes.

How it works

The processing system relies on Airware technology. After checking in on the Aer Lingus mobile app, travelers use a QR code at the kiosk. The unit prints the necessary baggage tag for the passenger to attach before dropping their bag off at a designated self-scan area.

John Dillon, head of ground operations at Emerald Airlines, which operates the regional services, said the goal was to provide a superior start to the customer journey.

"This new express feature means customers departing from Belfast City Airport will experience a more streamlined check-in process," Dillon told the news outlet. "The system is meant to minimize queues and stress, giving travelers extra time to enjoy the airport amenities before their flight."

Judith Davis, head of operations at Belfast City Airport, said the technology reinforces the airport's pledge to efficiency.

"We are committed to providing passengers with a quick and hassle-free airport experience," Davis told the news outlet. "The addition of the automated bag drop kiosks by Aer Lingus Regional further improves the ease and speed our passengers expect when they travel through our terminal."

Aer Lingus Regional flies from Belfast City to several destinations, including Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester.
