Internet World Group races to place kiosks at Shanghai Super Prix

January 20, 2003

WHAKATANE, N.Z. -- Internet World Group (IWG) wants to supply Internet broadcasting and Internet services via kiosks placed at the Shanghai Super Prix in China, scheduled for this coming October.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the event is being co-organized by California's Auto Racing Legends under a 10-year contract. Organizers claim the event will be the first world-class professional auto-racing event ever to be held in mainland China.

Kiosks placed at the racetrack would feature Internet telephony, video e-mail, 3-D viewing and celebrity and car information.

The Shanghai Super Prix, originally targeted for 2001, will be staged in the Pudong district of Shanghai. The event will include multiple forms of motor sport racing, including "legend" cars, stock cars, vintage NASCAR racers, motorcycles, Formula 2000 cars, dragsters, funny cars and drag bikes.

IWG chief executive Doug Bell said his company was competing with two other firms for the business.

The deal is expected to be worth at least NZ $9.09 million (U.S. $5 million). Two such events are scheduled for each year of the contract.

Bell believes the events could attract 500,000 TV and Internet viewers.
