JAKARTA - The Indonesian government plans to increase the number of Internet cafes and kiosks in the country from 2,500 to half a million by 2004, according to a report filed recently by the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The AFP reported that Dipo Alam, assistant to the coordinating minister for the economy, said Indonesia should claim funds early. Funds are provided by countries, such as Japan, that want to help developing nations gain access to technology.
Alam said Japan had offered $15 billion to Asian countries. Indonesia had made a proposal to Japan to develop internet kiosks, he said. He expected a reply by September, the report stated.
