Indiana BMV kiosks help storm victims replace lost documents

BMV Connect self-service kiosks are available to Indiana residents who need to replace important motor vehicle documents lost or damaged during recent severe storms, according to a Huntington County Tab report. The kiosks can process replacement requests for driver's licenses, learner's permits, commercial driver's licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations and vehicle titles. Replacement vehicle registrations are printed immediately at the kiosk, while other documents are mailed to the customer.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles issued the guidance as residents recover from flooding, tornadoes and a derecho that affected communities across the state. People displaced by the storms can temporarily update their mailing address to receive replacement documents without changing the legal address shown on their driver's license or identification card. Residents can also request replacements online through a myBMV account.

A visit to a BMV branch generally is necessary to replace a lost driver's license or identification card only if the credential has expired or needs to be amended. A photo ID also may be required when requesting a duplicate vehicle title at a branch. The BMV directs residents to its website to locate nearby BMV Connect kiosks, including machines offering 24-hour access.
