PANAJI, India - Tourists to the Indian state of Goa received an early New Year's present on Dec. 27, when state officials launched a new line of tourist information kiosks in Panaji, Goa's capital.
The kiosks, produced by New Delhi-based Hope Technologies, will offer information on the state, including transportation options and tourist facilities. The Times of India reported that the kiosks will be deployed at high-traffic locations throughout the state.
The 11-kiosk deployment is expected to cost about $120,000. Goa, located on India's west coast, is one of the nation's smallest states at just 3,702 square kilometers.
Goa's program is one of several kiosk initiatives launched in India toward the end of 2001. Another project includes the creation of community information kiosks at postal centers throughout the nation (See story: India expanding community kiosk program).
