Indian co. may merge Internet kiosks with telco biz

MUMBAI, India -- Tata Group may integrate the Internet kiosks of Tata Internet Services with Tata Teleservices, the basic telephony service provider of the group.

According to a report in the Business Standard, Tata Group has been considering integrating 600 Internet kiosks of Tata Internet services with that of Tata Tele, which offers post-paid Internet services under the brand, Netready Internet Services.

A senior executive with Tata Tele said, "We are evaluating several options for the group's Internet and cyber cafe business."

Tata Tele, the group's telecom flagship, offers basic telephony, Internet access, national and international long distance, and broadband.

The telecom unit has about 5,000 branded pay telephone booths across Andhra Pradesh and it intends to offer value-added services in Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra (including Goa), the report said.
