India utility places 100 bill-payment kiosks

September 21, 2003

BANGALORE, India -- The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is setting up 100 e-kiosks all over the city where residents can make online payments for water bills.

In an article in The Financial Times, BWSSB Chairman M.N. Vidyashankar, said the new kiosks will be rolled out in December. Infotech will supply the machines. The kiosks will replace 56 existing bill payment centers spread over various BWSSB offices.

"We are having a test run of the system at present. We hope to roll out the project after the trials," said Vidyashankar in the article.

The kiosks will be manned for the first few months to enable people to operate the system. The machines accept cash, checks and demand drafts. Payments can also be made with credit and debit cards.

BWSSB has also been working with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. to enable their customers to pay bills through the BSWWB network, the article said.

BWSSB supplies drinking water to 400,000 households in the city.
