India railway stations to get Internet kiosks

DELHI -- The Ministry of Railways will link the four metros of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai and four "mini" metros of Ahmedabad, Pune, Secunderabad and Bangalore with a fiber optic cable network for providing Internet service.

According to a news release, RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Railways, will implement the project during the current financial year 2003-2004.

RailTel has so far linked 91 cities and 1,096 stations out of 150 cities and 1,500 stations planned for the fiber optic cable network. About 200 stations will receive Internet kiosks, the release said.

An Internet kiosk has already been installed at the New Delhi railway station.

During the current financial year, Internet service will also be introduced on selected trains. A successful trial of Internet service aboard trains was carried out in April 2003 on the Delhi-Mathura section.
