The Elgin Police Department in Elgin, Illinois, has introduced an interactive kiosk in its lobby to share information about unsolved homicide and missing persons cases, according to a report by The Chicago Tribune.
Officials said the kiosk was inspired by the Karen Schepers case, a 42-year-old missing persons investigation that was solved earlier this year after the public provided new tips. Schepers, 23, disappeared in 1983, and her car and remains were recovered from the Fox River in March.
The kiosk allows visitors to view victims' personal stories by touchscreen and is accompanied by a storyboard about the Schepers case. Police said the goal is to encourage community members to learn about ongoing investigations and potentially provide new leads.
The initiative follows other outreach efforts by the department, including its "Somebody Knows Something" podcast, which helped generate information in the Schepers case.
