Illinois residents can now renew driver's licenses and vehicle registrations without leaving their cars at new drive-through kiosks at the Secretary of State's Springfield Flagship Center, according to a report by The State Journal Register.

The "Fast-Lane" kiosks at 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway operate 24/7 and let customers renew vehicle registrations and print license plate stickers immediately. Drivers can also renew licenses or state IDs, receive a temporary document on site, and get the new card by mail within 15 business days, according to the office.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias called the kiosks an added convenience for Central Illinois and part of a broader modernization effort. The machines are billed as the first of their kind in the region.

Most drivers renew licenses every four years, while registrations and stickers are renewed annually. Renewal notices include a bar code and PIN used at the kiosk. New applicants, including those seeking a REAL ID, must still visit a facility in person for identity verification.

During business hours, the Springfield Flagship Center continues to offer walk-in and appointment services from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made at ilsos.gov or by calling 800-252-8980.
