WARWICK, R.I. -- ICOA Inc. said its achievements of 2003 provide a solid base for the company's self-service expansion in 2004.
According to a news release, in 2003 ICOA expanded its core public broadband Internet access business into the high-growth wireless local area network market with wireless Internet (WiFi) hot spots and hot zones.
"WiFi was the logical complement to our core business of Internet terminal access, that now allows us to leverage synergies between the two services," said George Strouthopoulos, chief executive officer of ICOA, in the release.
He said ICOA's goal is to install Internet terminals wherever it provides WiFi access; and WiFi access wherever it offers public Internet terminals. In 2003, ICOA-owned and managed high-speed Internet points-of-presence increased 220 percent, from 63 locations to 204 locations at year's end, according to the release.
ICOA expanded in market segments that generate revenues from user-transaction fees, WiFi system sales, network management and support fees. Specifically in 2003, ICOA established beachheads in four key segments: airports, hotels, marinas and fast casual restaurants.
ICOA has announced a letter of intent to acquire Internet Media Group, an operator of high-speed Internet kiosks at Boston's Logan International airport and at multiple hotels in the Disney World area in Orlando, Fla.
