Hong Kong universities are offering students free, reusable food containers in order to reduce plastic waste. The containers are available in vending machines, according to a South China Morning Post report.
Users pay a HK$20 ($2.60) deposit using their Octopus cards with no time limit on returns. The used containers are returned to another machine for cleaning.
The machines have been set up in Hong Kong's eight public universities under a HK$2.1 million ($268,475) project funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities as part of the government's plan to ban plastic tableware next year.
