HMV selling VAT-free games at indoor kiosks
July 24, 2008
Gamezine.co.uk: HMV, a music, video and computer-game retailer in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has announced plans to launch a line of indoor kiosks that sell games, CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray films. Because of a loophole in U.K. tax laws, customers will not have to pay the usual U.K. treasury tax of 17.5 percent when they use the kiosks for imported goods. The loophole allows retailers to cut the value-added tax charge when they import products under a certain amount from outside the European Union.
