Haverhill, Masschusetts, is planning to increase the price of parking in order to better maintain the city's parking kiosks. Recently, several residents have been ticketed because the kiosks did not properly accept their payments, according to a report by Eagle Tribune.
"They do need work and we do need to take care of them," said David Van Dam, chief of staff to Mayor James Fiorentini. "That's something the parking commission has asked for in the past — increases in fees and changes of hours."
Currently, the city is exploring several options to improve the process, such as a "pay-by-plate" model, in which users enter their vehicle license plate number at the kiosk.
In addition, the city is planning to upgrade kiosk modems to improve overall battery life.
According to Van Dam, anyone who has received a parking ticket has 21 days to request a hearing from the parking clerk. The resident does not have to pay the fine while waiting for the hearing, according to the report.
