Hawaii considers reverse vending to support container recycling

Hawaii lawmakers are considering introducing reverse vending machines to recycle containers, according to a civilbeat.org report. A recently introduced bill calls for a pilot test.

Michael Burke, solid waste management coordinator, said reverse vending machines operated in Maui, Hana and Kahului from 2005 to 2021 and did not get much use due to difficulties and maintenance needs.

Burke said the machine technologies have since changed.
