Hartford upgrades its parking kiosks

November 1, 2016

Hartford, Connecticut's parking authority has hired Parkeon Inc. to retrofit 258 aging on-street, parking-payment kiosks, according to the Hartford Business Journal.

Eric Boone, CEO at Hartford Parking Authority (HPA), said it retained New Jersey-based Parkeon after evaluating its current and potential new meter systems. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Work will begin in November, with completion set for January.

Beginning in November 2008, Parkeon launched a $3.3 million replacement of much of the city's 1,600 coin-operated meters, particularly downtown, with tall, black parking kiosks which accept coins and credit cards.

HPA recently ended a 6-month test of an alternate parking-meter network that included cameras.

The revamped Parkeon kiosks will provide a large color screen and full keyboard. Parkers will not have to return to their vehicles to display a payment stub or "feed" a meter for the entire day. The meters will shut off payment after 6 p.m. and during special events.

The upgrade also will allow for the addition of a mobile app, which Boone said HPA expects to deploy shortly after all kiosks have received the new upgrade.
