Gurugram has become the first city in India to deploy a QR code-based kiosk system for paying traffic challans, marking a milestone in the country's digital governance and smart city efforts, according to a report by The 420.
Developed jointly by the Gurugram Police and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority under a corporate social responsibility initiative, the kiosk enables motorists to check and pay fines by entering their vehicle number and scanning a QR code for instant digital transactions.
"For the first time in India, traffic challans can be paid through QR-based kiosks," the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) told the news outlet. "This will not only ease the workload of traffic police but also provide a faster and transparent digital option for citizens."
The first kiosk, installed at Ambience Mall, will serve as a pilot before expansion to metro stations, markets, and other high-footfall areas. Each unit includes 24/7 functionality, beacon lights for visibility, and a one-touch video call system for emergencies linked to the city's Dial 112 network.
Officials said the kiosks are part of Gurugram's broader Smart City initiative to improve traffic management, automate enforcement, and enable future integration with AI analytics and real-time data systems.
