Self checkout at the grocery continues to expand due to labor shortages, and many shoppers are not happy about it, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

Two thirds of shoppers reported issues with the machines, according to a 2021 Raydiant survey.

While supermarkets experiment with new technology to improve the customer experience, such improvements are "a long way away," according to the article.

Self checkout doubled since the pandemic began and accounted for 30% of all grocery transactions in 2021.

Self-checkout machines cost between $14,000 and $40,000, according to a Food Marketing Institute report, but only require one or two workers for every five to 10 machines.
