Freezing temperatures disable parking kiosks in Massachusetts town

January 3, 2018

Freezing temperatures last week disabled some of the parking kiosks in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, according to the Lowell Sun. On Hurd Street, all but one kiosk was no longer functioning Thursday since buttons on the kiosks were frozen. Kiosks on Central Street just a few hundred feet away were functioning.

Parking Director Nick Navin said rain got into spaces between the buttons, then froze. Using deicer to fix the machines is problematic since it could fry circuit boards behind the buttons.

Navin said law enforcement officers will not ticket vehicles parked near frozen kiosks, though such decisions are made on a case by case basis.
