Florida city piloting bill-pay kiosk

May 30, 2014

Starting in September, North Lauderdale, Florida, residents who pay their water bills in cash will be able to make payments using a 24-hour kiosk at City Hall, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. A $3 transaction fee will be charged per transaction.

If the pilot, which will last until Dec. 1, 2014, is successful, the City will allow other bill payments, such as permits and recreation fees to be carried out at the kiosk, the newspaper reports.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel quotes a city spokesperson as saying that many customers without checking accounts prefer to pay in cash, rather than online, but can't get to City Hall during business hours.

Separately, Valley Electric Association, a member-owned electricity cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, is to install a new EasyPay Kiosk at the Pahrump location of Smith’s Food & Drug on June 2, Nevada Business reports.

The Smith’s kiosk, which will allow VEA members to pay their electricity bills at any hour of the day or night, is VEA’s second EasyPay Kiosk location. VEA installed the first EasyPay Kiosk outside its Pahrump office in October 2013.

To promote the Smith’s EasyPay Kiosk, VEA will provide a $200 Smith’s gift card to a randomly selected member who uses the kiosk to make a payment in June. In addition, VEA will offer one $50 Smith’s gift card in July and another in August to randomly selected kiosk users.

VEA members have several options for accessing their accounts and making payments at both EasyPay Kiosk locations, including scanning VEA’s EasyPay Card. People can also access their accounts by entering their account information or by scanning the barcode on their paper bills.

Members can make bill payments with credit or debit cards, electronic checks or cash, although coins are not accepted.

The Smith’s kiosk features a physical keyboard to assist members with entering their account information.
