Fee plan to drive traffic to kiosks crashes

March 9, 2010

WBZD.com (Boston): The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is set to reveal new kiosks today to help drive citizen traffic away from the counters, but a $5 fee for people who wanted to handle license-related tasks face-to-face with government employeeshas crashed and burned.
The fee—designed to motivate users not only to kiosks but also to online and by-telephone service solutions—was implemented March 1 but killed a day later by the governor, who had received significant backlash from voters.
People who paid the $5 will receive a refund if they fill out appropriate paperwork.
