Farmers in India to reap benefits of connectivity

July 15, 2003

PUNE, India --Farmers in the vicinity of the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth agricultural university will have direct access to agricultural information via kiosks on the school's wireless local loop system.

According to a news report on expressindia.com, the system will provide to farmers within a 25-kilometer radius of the university vital data and information about weather forecasts, market conditions, cropping pattern, management of crop diseases, research and technology.

Authorities at the school are working out details of the project, to be commissioned by this December. The university, in association with a wireless service provider agency, will install IT kiosks at villages within the operational area. The project will be extended to private parties on commercial contract basis for day-to-day management, the story said.

Farmers can use the kiosk to seek expert advice from university researchers and professors on specific crop problems.
